Land’s End | Pea Coat Giveaway
Few items carry the historical significance yet maintain the modern day wearability like the pea coat. The maritime apparel derives it’s name from the Dutch word “pije,” a 16th century term describing the coarse woolen fabric that makes up the jacket. The original active wear, the pea coat was designed for mariners that climbed high up in the riggings. The toilsome work demanded a coat that maintained a trim fit that bended around the midsection. Thus the pea coat was born to aid sailors that needed a jacket that was warm and allowed mobility for their naval duties.
The “convertible” collar on the peacoat also maintains a maritime function and is made to be worn up or down (while not impairing the sailor’s vision) to keep gales from disabling a seaman from doing his duties. True pea coats will also have a throat latch that can fasten the collar closed during massive sea storms which keeps the seafarer warm and dry in a place of otherwise of prominent heat loss around the neck.
The buttons also have a historical meaning as a legitimate peacoat has large, thick plastic buttons with the fouled anchor logo of a anchor entangled (or fouled) in its chain. The design dates back to Great Britian defeating the Spanish Armada in 1588. Following Lord Howard of Effingham’s naval victory, the personal fouled anchor seal of a great officer of state was adopted as the seal of his office, the Lord High Admiral of England. Over time the fouled anchor adorned naval insignias all over the world and can continue to be found emblazoned on the buttons of the pea coat.
Land’s End was kind enough to send me their own version of the pea coat, which maintains all the authentic qualities described above. Thankfully a lucky reader will have the opportunity to own one as well at no cost. Simply leave a comment on the post (and be following AHD on Facebook and Twitter) and you’ll be entered to win.

Cool jacket! I’d like one!
I was issued a black pea coat when I was in the US Navy back in ’93. I don’t know when they stopped issuing blue ones, but I would have loved to have one. Black is fine, but blue just pops!
